DIY: Butterfly Wings - A Painted Turkey Feather

Last week my grandma discovered this really great project; painting turkey feathers.
*scroll down to bottom of post for project instructions

For my feather, I decided to make it look like a Monarch Butterfly wing. I was inspired by this photo of a hat in Alexander McQueen's Savage Beauty exhibit in NY. Each butterfly on the hat is really a feather hand-painted to look like part of a butterfly. Once all put together and gathered into a bouquet atop the hat, it makes for a really astonishing piece.

Here is my feather once completed!

*You really don't need much other than a feather, painting supplies and paints, a can of clear sprayable glue, and newspaper for your painting surface. This project is easy to do and a fun summer past-time!

*Check out complete project instructions HERE.

*PROJECT TIP: on any area of the feather that you plan to paint on, it's best to paint a white background in the exact shapes and spots as you will paint the color onto. That way the colors will show better and be more vibrant, and it also hardens the feather more for easier painting.

*WHERE TO BUY: Bass Pro Shop -online

I hope you try this project!!! If you do, post a comment sometime and send a link to photos or a blog post If you blog about it.
