*skill note: you have to hand-sew to do this project
*creative note: you don't have to limit this project idea only to denim, shorts, and patriotic prints. You could decorate the pockets on any clothing item with any type of fabric.
You will need:
1 pair of denim shorts (can be shorts already or pants cut into shorts)
6in/6in square of patriotic print fabric (like stars, stripes, fireworks, red white blue, etc.)
sewing pins
6in/6in square of patriotic print fabric (like stars, stripes, fireworks, red white blue, etc.)
sewing pins
matching thread
sewing needle
scissors
Step 1: cut out the square of fabric and lay it over the pocket on your shorts. Use a marker of fabric chalk to draw the exact size on the pocket onto your fabric piece. Now trim the fabric around that new shape but add about 1/4 inch around all edges of the fabric. This way you can fold under the edges on top of the shorts' pocket for clean lines.

Step 2: fold the fabric sides under itself and lay on top of the shorts' pocket. Pin in place.
Step 3: hand-sew the fabric to the pocket! Make sure not the accidentally sew the front on the shorts to the back of the shorts. Only sew through the shorts' pocket and the fabric.
Note: be careful not to sew the pocket shut at the top. You are attaching fabric to the original pocket, but don't stitch the fabric and pocket to the pants and seal it. Then it wouldn't be a pocket anymore!
Now you're done! You can sew a patch of fabric on both back pockets, but I chose to just do one.
This is what I wore this Independence Day on Monday.
Do you like the project? Let me know in the comments!
